In the Spring of 2011 and 2012,  Pawtucket Church was pleased to be the host for UMass Lowell’s “Lowell Immersion: A local Alternative Spring Break”.  Led by UML’s Center for Family, Work and Community, a group of students lived at the church while exploring Lowell.

A group of students participated in this week long experience, volunteering at UTEC, Lowell Transitional Living Center, YMCA, Walter Denney Youth Center, and our church.  These volunteer projects consisted of serving meals to homeless community members, tutoring youth after school, playing basketball with teens, painting walls, and learning about their new home, the City of Lowell – all while representing UMass Lowell within our local community.  Pawtucket Congregational Church provided the group with a place to sleep for the week, a large kitchen, and meeting space.  The group of students bonded quickly over their experience together and shared the impact the week was having on their lives.

Support from UML’s Student Affairs, and UML staff, enabled them to secure meals, transportation, and other supplies for the community service week.  The Center for Family, Work and Community and Pawtucket Congregational are looking forward to expanding this program in 2012 for the Third Annual Lowell Immersion Spring Break!
